A customized content management system controls traffic flows in the Baltic Sea Port of Lübeck.

In the Baltic Sea Port of Lübeck, we have implemented a comprehensive, digital traffic control system designed to ensure smooth operations within the port area. LED panels above each entry lane communicate relevant information, such as vehicle type, traffic regulations, information about the process, and, of course, whether the lane is open or closed.

At the heart of the system is a web interface, the so-called “Traffic Management System.” This is operated by port employees and enables targeted and situation-dependent communication with waiting drivers of vehicles wishing to enter the port with just a few clicks. Our solution controls traffic flows, organizes lane guidance, and delivers relevant information in real time – with a focus on user-friendliness, visibility, and efficiency.

A special feature is the integrated “Emergency Function.” This allows port traffic to be evacuated in an emergency, emergency vehicles to be directed, and the port to be closed to incoming vehicles. All of this is controlled in real time at the touch of a button – an important contribution to securing the critical infrastructure in the port.

Two screens control traffic for the car ferries at the Lübeck harbor. Lane A is open, while Lane B is closed.

The first half of the system went into operation at the end of 2018 and was extensively expanded in 2025. Since then, the system has managed not only freight traffic in the port, but also private traffic. Our traffic management system is now also operated and used by various shipping companies that dock their Baltic Sea ferries in Lübeck. As part of the expansion, our system underwent a fundamental update. From a facelift of the interface design to strengthening IT security, the upgrade was used to perfect the system.

In addition to the central control system, we have implemented additional digital touchpoints in the port area, including a large-format video wall at the cruise terminal Ostpreußenkai for tourist information, as well as digital information displays in the main lounge and waiting areas.
